The Society of Actuaries Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for the 2013-2014 Board of Directors.
What positions are open?
We are seeking nominations for President-Elect (four-year term), Vice President (two- year term) and Elected Board Members (three-year term).
What criteria must nominated candidates meet?
You must be an FSA and CPD compliant. In addition, the Nominating Committee seeks candidates who are
- committed to the actuarial profession—demonstrated, for example through volunteer service;
- knowledgeable about the profession and its stakeholders;
- strong leaders;
- enthusiastic and engaging communicators;
- strategic thinkers;
- respectful of others.
Nominees will be invited to complete a questionnaire, and participate in a phone interview with representatives from the Nominating Committee. More information on the nominating process can be found in the Election Fact Sheet.
Who is the ideal board candidate?
There is no ideal board candidate. The Nominating Committee seeks diversity in terms of areas of practice, industry or employment sectors, opinion and/or geographic locations. The most important characteristic is a willingness to engage constructively in the strategic direction of the SOA.
Is SOA volunteer experience a prerequisite for board service?
There is a certain amount of knowledge that comes from experience on education and other committees, section councils or the SOA Board. Prior experience is important but is not the only factor that determines a place on the ballot.
What is the time commitment?
There are typically three Board meetings (March, June and October) and an Orientation meeting (November) that are 1-½ days each. Preparation for these meetings might take an additional half-day. There are also, typically, monthly conference between the Board meetings. Each Elected Board Member (EBM) will have additional assignments that could average one to two hours per week. The President-Elect and Vice Presidents will have significant additional time commitments.
More information can be found in the VP/EBM job description and the President-Elect job description
What if I'm nominated, but not elected?
With a finite number of seats available, and a highly talented pool of candidates, not everyone will be elected. Many nominees find success at their second (or third!) attempt. There are also myriad volunteer opportunities within the SOA to develop your leadership skills. You can check these out on this link: SOA Volunteer Information .
