Bruce Schobel serves as the 59th president of the Society of Actuaries for 2007–2008.
Bruce is a vice president and actuary at New York Life Insurance Company and has been with the company since 1990.
His responsibilities include overseeing the actuarial content of the company's federal income tax return,
withholding and reporting and compliance with the Internal Revenue Code.
Prior to joining New York Life, Bruce was a principal with William M. Mercer, Inc., where he was the in–house technical
expert on Social Security programs. Previously, Bruce was at the Social Security Administration where he served as staff
actuary to the National Commission on Social Security Reform (Greenspan Commission). He has acted as a senior policy
advisor to the Commissioner of Social Security. Bruce is a founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance
and has served as a consultant on Social Security to many foreign nations and international organizations.
Bruce is an active volunteer leader within the actuarial profession. He is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries
and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, chairs the Social Security committee of the American Council of Life Insurers
and serves on the editorial advisory board of Contingencies magazine. He also is a member of the American Academy of
Actuaries' pension practice council and former chair of its social insurance committee. He serves on the Board of
Directors of both the American Academy of Actuaries and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
Bruce holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
