In Memory of Carman A. Naylor
Carman Alfred Naylor, FSA, FCIA, the first president of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, passed away in Ottawa on July 25, 2007 just after his 96th birthday. Naylor became CIA President upon the establishment of the Institute by an Act of the Canadian Parliament on March 18, 1965.
Naylor was born in West Wawanosh Township in Huron County, Ontario on July 17, 1911. He graduated from the University of Toronto Victoria College in 1933 with a gold medal in mathematics and physics and joined the London Life Insurance Company in London, Canada, earning his Fellowship in the Society in 1940. During World War II, he served in the Canadian Air Force as a navigation instructor and later became the senior group health actuary at the London Life from which company he retired in 1974. Naylor was a major contributor to the first government health care programs for both Ontario and Alberta.
He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy. He is survived by a son and a daughter, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
