In Memory of John C. Angle
John C. Angle, FSA, passed away Sept. 23, 2008, at the age of 85. He was the second Nebraskan to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.
Angle was born in New York City on Aug. 22, 1923. He graduated from Lincoln's public schools and the University of Chicago, and was a third–generation Nebraskan. He served as an Air Force Weather Officer during World War II and the Korean War.
He was retired chairman of the Board and CEO of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of New York City. Prior to that position, Angle was vice president and actuary of Woodmen Accident and Life Company and a director of the Fremont National Bank and Trust Company. While in New York with Guardian Life, Angle was a director of the following boards: the Life Insurance Council of New York, the Health Insurance Association of America, the American Life Council and the Fifth Avenue Association. He was the initial president of the 14th Street–Union Square Business Improvement District, the first such organization in New York City.
Angle's efforts on behalf of his profession have included tours of duty as a member of the Society of Actuaries' (SOA) Committee on Memorials (1989–2001), an elected SOA Board member (1980–83 and 1984–87), member of the SOA's Finance Committee (1984–87) and SOA director of publications (1976–79). For the International Actuarial Association (IAA), Angle served as U.S. vice president (1984–92), U.S. secretary and national correspondent (1980–84) and U.S. representative (1978–80). For some years, he was head of the United States delegation to the Governing Council of the IAA.
He was also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries serving on the Board of Directors (1978–79). In addition, he was a member of the Academy's Committee on State Representative—Nebraska (1973) and played an integral role for its Trustees of the Actuarial Education and Research Fund (1984).
Angle headed the annual drive of the United Fund, the Lincoln Community Council, the Nebraska Actuaries Club, and served as a director of the Lincoln Foundation, Lincoln General Hospital, and the Lincoln Symphony. He chaired the design and construction of an addition to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in the 1990s. Angle was active in providing support for teaching in the humanities at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and joined with others in promoting Nebraska Trails.
Angle is survived by his wife, Catherine Sellers Angle; and children, Margaret Susan Angle, Scottsdale, Ariz; and James Sellors Angle, Minneapolis, Minn; grandchildren, Chelsea and Alicia Angle; Stephanie Bonifield; and three great–grandchildren.
