Deceased Members–2008
In Memory of Peter Burton Deakins
Peter Burton Deakins, FSA, died on March 25, 2008 following a tragic skiing accident while on vacation with his family at Lake Tahoe.
Deakins grew up in Gladwyne, graduated from Harriton High School in 1978 and from the University of Pennsylvania
Wharton School of Business in 1982. He married Sue Twine, also a University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business
graduate (1983). He became a Fellow for the Society of Actuaries in 1985 and a member of the American Academy of
Actuaries while completing the 10 exams in fairly close to a record time. He served on SOA's Valuation and Related
Areas Committee from 1987 to 1992.
He was a consulting actuary and a principal with the Philadelphia office of Milliman, Inc. for 28 years and oversaw
Milliman's technology group for the administration of health and annuity policies. Deakins also provided a broad array
of insurance consulting in mergers and acquisitions projects and played a significant role in the rehabilitation of
several failed insurers. He worked for Milliman his entire business career, having started with them part–time
while still in college.
Deakins is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, also an actuary; his children, Robyn, Kenny and Carl; his parents,
Warren and Nancy Deakins; his mother–in–law, Margaret Twine; his sisters, Teri D'Alonzo (Gil) and Karen
Burke; his brother Jay Deakins (Sharon); his sister–in–law Judy Warmingham; and nine nieces and nephews.
As tragic as the Lake Tahoe incident was, said his brother Jay, Peter "was doing what he loved." Deakins loved his
family and life. He had a heart of gold and always maintained the highest level of consideration and integrity in his
dealings with others.
