In Memory of Mary Hardiman Adams
Mary Hardiman Adams, ASA, MAAA, FCA, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009. She was 81.
Born in Perth Amboy, Adams resided there before moving to Llewellyn Park, West Orange, 40 years ago. She was a 1943 graduate of Mount Saint Mary's Academy, North Plainfield, and was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and chemistry from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1947. Adams was a principal in George B. Buck Consulting Actuaries in New York City, where she was employed as a consulting actuary for 45 years until her retirement in 1992.
She served on the board of directors of the American Academy of Actuaries from 1973 to 1976 and 1979 to 1981. She was the first recipient of their Jarvis Farley Service Award in 1992. She also served on the board of directors of the Conference of Actuaries in Public Practice from 1976 to 1987. She was president of the board from 1984 to 1985 and was on the Council of Presidents of the North American Actuarial Bodies from 1983 to 1985.
Adams was a recipient of the YWCA of New York City's Academy of Women Leaders award for 1980. She served on the board of trustees of Saint Barnabas Medical Center from 1979 to 1988, and was a communicant of St. John's Church, Orange.
She was predeceased by her parents, Edward L. and Agnes L. McClelland Hardiman. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Henry G. Adams; a brother, James E. Hardiman of Perth Amboy; and a cousin, Ann Hardiman of Washington.
