In Memory of Dr. Beda Chan

Dr. Beda Chan, ASA, MAAA, passed away on Oct. 23, 2009. He joined the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in 1998 as associate professor, and had taught at HKU for eight years. He taught Advanced Life Contingencies I and II, Risk Theory and some other Actuarial Science courses. Before joining HKU, Chan was an associate professor at the University of Toronto. His 1990 paper, "Ruin probability for translated combination of exponential claims," (ASTN Bulletin) has been cited by many papers in actuarial science. Chan was an associate of the Society of Actuaries and served as a member of several SOA committees for many years including various education and exam committees, the Committee on Papers, and the Committee on Research Theory and Applications.
