In Memory of Robert H. Jordan.
Robert H. Jordan, FSA, MAAA, an insurance actuary, navy veteran of World War II and devoted family man, died July 25 of an infection after an extended illness. He was 83.
He was born in Highland Park, New Jersey to Margaret Taylor Jordan and Robert S. Jordan, immigrants from Scotland. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He graduated from Rutgers University and went to work as an actuary for Equitable Life Insurance Co. in New York City, where he met his wife Virginia.
Jordan moved to Philadelphia in 1957 to become the chief actuary of the Insurance Company of North America's new life-insurance company. He later held senior management positions with Provident Mutual and Manhattan Life Insurance companies.
He had a passion for tennis, which he pursued not only as a player, but as an official, tournament organizer, fundraiser and other positions in the local and national tennis community. He also wrote a book, Tennis for Winners.
Always interested in his community, Jordan served on the King or Prussia Rotary Club and as a volunteer with the Upper Merion Parks and Historic Foundation.
He is survived by his wife Virginia; his daughters, Barbara and Kathy; his sister Emma and two granddaughters.
