In Memory of Brian S. Sann
Brian S. Sann, FSA, passed away on April 20, 2009. He was born in Albany, New York, and following high school, studied mathematics and actuarial science at the University of Michigan where he received his bachelor's degree and master's degree. After graduation, Sann joined the actuarial staff of the New York State Teachers' Retirement System and became a principal actuary. Later he moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to join the staff of Conrad Siegel Actuaries. He became a partner-shareholder in the firm and was responsible for pension matters for major clients and firm–wide marketing efforts.
Sann was an active member of his community. He served as president of the local Red Cross Chapter. He always carried rescue items in his car and frequently raced to help victims of fires and floods. He successfully merged the Harrisburg and Lancaster Chapters of the Red Cross. He also served as president of the Colonial Park Rotary Club.
Sann retired at age 52 and his family moved to Silver Bay where he could sail his boat. (His hobbies included sailing, tennis and skiing). He took up duplicate bridge and became a Life Master in three years. Although there was no nearby duplicate bridge game, he played on the Internet and traveled to regional games, becoming a Silver Master after amassing 1,000 master points.
He became a trustee of the Silver Bay Association, a large YMCA family facility. He became involved in its international student program and took visiting students on tours of the United States. Sann started a Math Club in the local school and applied for and received a grant from the Actuarial Education and Research Fund. He maintained his interest in the club and obtained many guest lecturers who stimulated the students' interest in mathematics.
He was appointed to the board of the United Methodist Church in Ticonderoga and was an active and generous member. He and his wife established a permanent fund at the Greater Harrisburg Foundation, the income from which will continue their generosity in perpetuity.
He is survived by his wife Beverly and their daughter Sharon Sann, Ph.D., a post–doctoral fellow at the University of California San Diego and her husband Jon Lin, Ph.D. Sann is also survived by his sister, Karen Johnson.
