In Memory of Gene Phelan Archer

Gene Phelan Archer, FSA, died on December 26, 2010, in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 1948. He became a fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Phelan worked for Aetna Life Insurance in Hartford, Connecticut; Southland Life Insurance in Dallas, Texas; American Hospital and Life in San Antonio, Texas; Kentucky Central Life in Lexington, Kentucky; Seguros Independencia, Seguros America Banamex, Compania Administradora; and Nathal Actuarios y Consultores, all in Mexico City, DF. His work concentrated mostly on life insurance, pension plans and employee benefits.

Archer was also very active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as the long-standing Scoutmaster for Troop 1. He also led a number of backpacking expeditions to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Delfina Dubon de Archer, and their children Carla Gene Archer, San Miguel Allende, Mexico; Philip Archer, Austin, Texas; William Archer, Mexico City, D.F.; and Leslie Ann Archer, Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by Roger W. Archer, Tucson, Arizona; and Kathleen F. Archer, Houston, Texas, children by his previous marriage with Joyce K. (Smith) Archer (deceased). He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Aaron, Pablo, Andres, Bernardo, Alexander, Mariana and Christian.
