In Memory of A. Norman Crowder, III
 Society of Actuaries' Past President A. Norman Crowder, III, FSA, MAAA, HonFIA, passed away on March 12, 2010, in Naples, Florida. He was 75.
Crowder was a graduate of the Wardlaw School, Plainfield, New Jersey, Middlebury College and the University of Michigan where he received a master's degree in actuarial science. He also graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1985. He proudly served his country by spending four years as a naval officer.
Crowder had a long career as an actuary and businessman and managed the second largest division of Towers Perrin. In his later years, he was most proud of his local civic involvement activities, including being a member of the Greater Naples Leadership. He served as a math instructor at Pace, was a Guardian Ad Litem and was very involved with the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.
He also served as board member and president of the Society of Actuaries (1999-2000) and of the American Academy of Actuaries (1983-1984).
Crowder was a highly respected leader of the SOA. His involvement in the organization was extensive. He served on the following committees and task forces in various capacities including chair, vice chair and member: Task Force on Discipline; Committee on Elections; Committee on Strategic Planning; North American Actuarial Council; Research Project Oversight Subcommittee; Admissions Committee; Finance Committee; International Policy Committee; International Association Actuarial Committee; Marketplace Relevance Strategic Action Team; Operations Committee; Committee on Professionalism; Task Force on Review of Disciplinary Procedures; Committee on Research Coordination; Executive Committee; Task Force on Election Issues; Committee on Continuing Education; and the Task Force on Strengthening the Actuarial Profession.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Eliza (Miller) Crowder; son, Mark; daughter, Kristin and loving grandchildren Caroline and Jack. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20 at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Program of Collier Health Services (www.collier.org/donate.php) or to Middlebury College .
