Larry M. Gorski

Larry M. Gorski, FSA, MAAA, passed away on May 12, 2010 in New Berlin, Illinois. Gorski was born in Chicago on May 9, 1949, the son of Michael and Frances Dudjinski Gorski. He married Charlene Banner on May 25, 1984, in Carlinville.

Gorski graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb with a master's degree in mathematics. He worked for many years as a life actuary for the Department of Insurance before retiring in 2003. He also held various positions following retirement, including working as an adjunct teacher at LLCC Jacksonville campus and as a math tutor at Lawrence Adult Education Center in Springfield.

He was a very involved member of the Society of Actuaries, serving as a member of the Board of Directors (2000–2003) and held the position of vice-president of the SOA (2003–2005). In addition, he served as chairperson for the Board Advisory Group on Research and the Research Project Oversight Subcommittee. Gorski was also a member of the Board Advisory Group on Continuing Education, the Risk Management Research Team, the Task Force on Long-Term Care Insurance Valuation, the Life Practice Advancement Committee, the Committee on Individual Life and Annuities Professional Development, the Preferred Mortality Study Task Force, the Emerging Issues Advisory Committee, the Knowledge Management Strategic Action Team, the SOA Website Editorial Board, the Risk-Based Capital Covariance Task Force, the NAAJ Review Group, the Financial Reporting Section Council and the Health Section Council. He also served as treasurer of the two councils. In addition, Gorski was the co-chairperson of the Preferred Mortality Study Project Oversight Group.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Charlene; three sisters, Linda DeLiso of Tucson, Arizona, Pat (Wally) Szymczak of Mt. Prospect, Illinois and Donna (Tim) Berry of Chicago; two nieces, Natalie and Lisa; and five nephews, Sam, Jeff, Matt, Jacob and Caleb.

Gorski enjoyed astronomy and loved animals. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, Illinois 62702.

The family will receive visitors from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2010, at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, 714 E. Gibson St., New Berlin. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
