In Memory of Courtland C. Smith
Courtland C. Smith FSA, MAAA died on October 21, 2002 in Dallas, Tex. Court is survived by his widow, Judith Austin Smith, two sons and two daughters from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren.
Court Smith was born on February 4, 1927 in New York City. He served in the army during World War II, attending the Army Language School at Monterey, Calif. He subsequently received his Bachelor's degree from Yale and his Master's from Columbia.
He joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an actuarial trainee in 1954. Most of his professional career was spent in reinsurance, where he held senior-level actuarial positions with North American Re (now Swiss Re), Cologne Re, and Winterthur Re. He had also been an independent consultant.
He was a member of the Yale Alumni Association.
Court will be remembered for his gentleness, his unshakable integrity, and his remarkable skill in devising ingenious solutions to difficult problems. He was a beloved friend and colleague to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
