Job Title: Business Analyst

Reports to: Director of Finance

Job Summary

This position will have an active role in the monthly reporting and analysis, ad hoc reporting, budgeting, and projections.

Essential Functions

  • Analyze the organization's major activities (SOA dues, section dues, exams, professional development, and market research) and trends and compare against prior year's results. Evaluate financial information as well as business drivers such as candidate counts, exam pass rates, member counts, etc to understand the changes and help forecast future years business drivers and financial results.
  • Using analysis collected from the organization's major activities, develop projections and compare against the annual budget
  • Perform in-depth analysis of professional development seminars and webcasts and identify solutions for maintaining margins
  • Analyze payroll allocations as they relate to education and professional development margins
  • Build and maintain margin analysis to support education and professional development
  • Evaluate margins and cost efficiencies in various areas of the organization as needed
  • Research, track, and analyze exam candidate trends
  • Develop meaningful metrics for evaluating strategic initiatives
  • Assist with tracking revenues and expenses vs. budget and analyze variances monthly and make recommendations of corrective measures
  • Assist in the budget and projection process
  • Proactively search out opportunities for operational improvement through analysis of trends and report out in an easily understood format
  • Link market research with the business drivers and leading indicators. Cross reference market research findings with changes in candidate counts, attendance numbers and demographics of the members and candidates.
  • Explore benchmarking with other organizations
  • Prepare recommendations, financial business cases, and presentations for senior management
  • Prepare ad hoc financial analysis and analytical support as required

Non-Essential Funcations

  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines
  • Continuously look for new ways to present existing and new information in greater detail in a more timely and efficient manne
  • Collaborate with department managers to develop insights based on data results
  • Ensure that managers are provided highly accurate information and analysis for their departments

Education and Experience Required (an equivalent amount of training, education, and experience will be considered)

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Minimum of five years of experience in business with two of the five years in financial analysis

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities including competencies that may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.

  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting and GAAP
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Great Plains accounting software
  • Strong initiative and ability to manage multiple projects as well as strong follow through skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of policy and ability to apply that to unique situations
  • Ability to make objective decisions using sound judgment
