Job Title: Director of Marketing
Reports to: Managing Director of Marketing and Communications
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, the Director of Marketing is responsible for the development and implementation of the integrated strategic marketing program of the SOA. This includes marketing the SOA's professional development offerings and its credentials in North America and select international markets. It will involve working closely with the Director of Communications to integrate the SOA's marketing and communications approaches in support of the Society's strategic objectives and operational goals. This role also serves as staff support on committees and task forces as necessary.
Essential Functions
- Create and implement a dynamic marketing program for the Society of Actuaries that advances the SOA's brand identity, broadens awareness and appreciation of the profession and the SOA's credentials among key audiences.
- Develop marketing plans that support the reach and success of the SOA's professional development offerings. All programs must be outcome-oriented, measurable, achievable and connected to the branding of the actuarial profession developed and implemented by the SOA.
- Provide direction on integrating marketing strategies with communications strategies to support the new strategic approach, in consultation with the Director of Communications and Managing Director, Marketing & Communications. Provide day-to-day counsel and direction to firm(s) engaged to support SOA's marketing programs.
- Provide marketing direction to the work of the external communications firm engaged in the SOA's public relations activities, as appropriate.
- Research and recommend new marketing initiatives to take advantage of opportunities for continued membership growth in North America and internationally.
- Provide guidance to the ongoing growth and enhancement of the actuarial profession's brand identity, ensuring it consistently represents the profession to external audiences.
- Provide oversight on development of a corporate sponsorship program.
- Provide support to the MD of Marketing and Communications, serving as marketing counsel, as needed, to key SOA leaders and staff.
- Develop and manage the marketing budget, participate in Board meetings where appropriate, and travel to select conferences and events to represent the organization as assigned.
- Manage and develop a staff. Direct reports will be a marketing manager and brand manager. Indirect reports are two marketing and communications specialists and two graphic designers.
- Other responsibilities as assigned to support strategic functions and initiatives.
Education and Experience Required (an equivalent amount of training, education, and experience will be considered)
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing or related discipline. A master's degree in marketing or business administration is advantageous.
- Minimum of 10 years experience successfully executing marketing programs and campaigns, including leading and directing applicable resources. Experience with marketing internationally and in the association environment is strongly desired.
- Minimum of three years supervising the work of professional staff and vendors.
- Experience in an advertising or integrated marketing communications firm is preferred.
- Experience marketing a professional credential is preferred.

- Ability to manage resources in a matrix/cross-functional organization and the capacity for creating, identifying and capitalizing on opportunities.
- Ability to learn quickly, demonstrate critical thinking and make situation-appropriate decisions using sound judgment.
- Experience with use of marketing approaches in multi-channel communications vehicles and formats, including social networking and social media.
- Knowledge of how to and ability to work well with volunteers and demonstrate a high level of diplomacy.
- Must be creative.
- Must demonstrate ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
- Must be comfortable with taking initiative and able to work against deadlines with minimum supervision.

- Typical office environment.
- Work travel as appropriate, including attendance at the SOA's five major in-person professional development meetings.
Supervisory Responsibilities and Coordination required to perform the functions of this job.
- This position supervises the marketing team and its functions. This includes direct supervision of a Marketing Manager and a Brand Manager. Indirect reports include the following roles: Marketing and Communications Project Specialists (2) and Graphic Designers (2).
- This position also requires daily interaction with SOA vendors.
- The position also requires project coordination and collaboration with SOA departments and external actuarial organizations.
