Fellowship Exams to be offered twice per year beginning Fall 2011
Questions and Answers
Q1: What exams will be offered over the next two years?
A1: There are no changes for exam administrations through Spring 2011. Starting in Fall 2011 all FSA exams will be administered in both spring and fall.
Q2: Can two exams be taken at one session?
A2: Yes. Within a given track the two required exams will be given on different dates.
Q3: Why the delay until Fall 2011?
A3: The time taken from the first draft of questions to the administration of the exam is approximately 10 months. The exam creation process includes the initial question drafting, several levels of question review, pretesting of the complete exam, exam typing, proofing, printing and mailing. As volunteers are responsible for all but the typing, printing and mailing their commitment must be spread out over time. Furthermore, before the new process can begin, additional exam question writers must be recruited in order to produce double the current number of exam questions.
Q4: Is there a recommended order for taking the FSA exams?
A4: SOA rules do not require that exams be taken in any particular order. Candidates are encouraged to determine their appropriate sequence based on factors including readiness to sit for an exam or study time available. However, it is expected that the education committees for each track will provide a recommended order for completing the FSA requirements (both exams and modules) that would be the most conducive to learning. This information is being developed and will be provided within the next few months.
