2008 SOA Board of Directors Elections Results
At the close of several weeks of voting, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) today announces that S. Michael McLaughlin was elected President of the Society for the 2009-2010 term. McLaughlin will serve as President-Elect during the association's 2008-2009 year and will begin his presidential duties at the SOA's annual meeting to be held in October 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
McLaughlin currently works as Principal, Global Leader, Actuarial & Insurance Solutions of Deloitte Consulting LLP, where he leads 650 professionals in 30 countries. He provides product, financial reporting and ERM services to clients in financial services and other industries. He has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries since 2001 and also holds the SOA's Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst designation. McLaughlin is also a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
As the SOA's 61st president, McLaughlin intends to increase actuarial employment opportunities in ERM and broader areas, while maintaining and enhancing the value of actuarial credentials. He will make the SOA increasingly valuable to existing members, attract new members, and execute on other strategic initiatives important to members.

Besides the selection of a new President-Elect, SOA Fellows also chose three new Vice Presidents, six new Board members and considered a Bylaws amendment to allow Associates who have been members of the SOA for five years or more to vote in elections for president-elect, vice presidents and elected members of the Board of Directors. Additional communication will be distributed later announcing the new choice of Section Council members.
As part of its commitment to transparency in operations, the release of the vote totals for the Vice Presidents positions is being shared for the first time. Last year marked the first time vote totals for the President-Elect position were released.

An Amendment to the SOA Bylaws
The Fellows of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) have approved the adoption of a Bylaws amendment to allow Associates who have been members of the SOA for five years or more to vote in elections for president-elect, vice presidents and elected members of the Board of Directors.
The new bylaws became effective upon certification of the vote. The bylaws change vote required a 25% participation rate from SOA Fellows with a two-thirds approval from those voting.
More than 3,800 Fellows voted in the bylaws proxy out of 12,229 eligible voters. There were 2,654 proxy votes cast in favor of the bylaws (68.9%) and 1,196 votes opposed to the bylaws change (31.1%).
