Mentor Program
The Younger Actuaries Network IDEA Mentoring Program welcomes actuaries, prospective, young, or less young, to join us. Everyone benefits from a mentor. Most successful business people have at least one, if not more, mentors. There are many sources of information and advice, but a mentor, who has traveled down the road before you, is uniquely able to guide you as you make your way. She or he can share the wisdom that comes from experience with you, on an ongoing basis.
Our Mentoring program aims to provide protégés, actuaries in the earlier stages of their career, including students interested in being actuaries, access to mentors who can serve as a counselor, advisor and confidant to turn to with questions and concerns about personal and professional growth as actuaries. The interaction between a mentor and a protégé will provide learning and networking opportunities to each of them, be interesting, and also fun!
What is the "IDEA"?
- Cultivate Interest in being an Actuary in today's world
- Provide protégés Direction in various stages of their professional development
- Educate on new ideas, areas of practice and growth opportunities
- Spur to Action, encouraging younger actuaries to be proactive and to take responsibility for their professional growth
We currently have several mentor-protégé pairs enjoying each others company. Our mentors are at various stages of their careers from new ASAs to actuarial industry experts. Our protégés are college students, professionals looking to change careers and young actuaries, some new FSAs. We hope you will join us!
To be a mentor you must be:
- An ASA or FSA with at least 3 years of experiences in insurance or financial industry
- Willing and able to devote the time needed to develop a positive and effective mentoring relationship (1–2 hours at least quarterly)
