Entrepreneurial Actuaries Section (EAS) 2009 Papers Competition

The Entrepreneurial Actuaries Section of the Society of Actuaries is pleased to announce the winning entries of the 2009 papers competition. The competition was open to all SOA members and addressed topics related to being an entrepreneur – from career choice to approaches for problem solving. More than 30 essays were submitted from authors all over the world. We sincerely thank all of the participants. Our award recipients for the top entries are:

First Place

• John Melinte, ASA for "Longevity Risk Solutions for Small Canadian Pension Plans"

Second Place

• Luc Berlinguette, FSA, FCIA for "A New Model for Determining Salaries for NHL Players"

Honorable Mentions

• Jay Jaffe, FSA, MAAA for "Intellectual Capital: The Key to Surviving and Prospering as a Consulting Actuary during an Economic Depression"
• Thomas Nightingale, FSA, MAAA, CERA, FCA for "The Risk-Managing Entrepreneur"
• Nick Ortner, ASA, MAAA, for "Negate Failure and Legal ("N-F-L") Optimizing Player Decision-Making in the National Football League (NFL)"

The Section awarded writers of the top entries $5,000 for first place, $3,500 for second place and $1,000 for honorable mention. In addition, upcoming issues of the Entrepreneurial Actuaries Section newsletter, The Independent Consultant, will feature these essays and many of the other submissions.
