Forecasting & Futurism Section News
On March 16, acting on the unanimous recommendation from the Futurism Section Council, the Board of Directors of the Society of Actuaries approved changes in the name and charter to be known going forward as the Forecasting & Futurism Section.
The change in the Section's purpose mirrors what is happening in the field of applied forecasting. In this field, traditional futurism techniques are now being combined with traditional statistical methods and newer modeling techniques (like agent–based modeling) to produce more powerful ways to explore the future.
The newly constituted Section will provide a means for actuaries to see practical applications of basic forecasting techniques (such as time–series exponential smoothing or Box–Jenkins methods) as well as more advanced techniques (such as Bayesian methods, agent–based modeling, and futurism techniques).
The Section Council plans several events and member benefits to promote the revitalization of the Forecasting and Futurism Section, such as:
- Life and Health Spring Meetings
- Delphi Study Report & Audience Voting: Blue Ocean Strategies in Technology for Business Acquisition by the Life Insurance Industry
- SOA09 Annual Meeting
- Following his Presidential Luncheon talk, a jointly sponsored session with Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan.
- Forecasting and Futurism Section Newsletter
- The Section's newsletter returns with articles reflecting the change in the Section.
