Investment Council Job Description
Council Member
The purpose of the Section shall be to encourage and facilitate the professional development of its members through activities such as meetings, seminars, research studies, interchange of information, and publication of literature pertaining to the investment of insurance company and pension fund assets and of other institutional funds, the management and measurement of those assets in relation to the liabilities of these entities, and any other subjects relating to investments as may seem pertinent, advantageous, and beneficial to the members of the Section.
The Council consists of nine members of the Investment Section; three members are elected each year for a term of three years. Each council member is expected to play an active role in the activities of the council.
Responsibilities include:
- Attending face–to–face meetings – the exact dates and locations are determined by the section council. Traditionally the Council meets the Sunday afternoon preceding the SOA Annual Meeting.
- Participating in council conference calls – these occur as needed.
- Acting as a section liaison to various SOA committees and project oversight groups, such as the spring and annual meetings program committees, Finance Practice Area committees, Life Practice Area committees, Continuing Education Coordinating Committee, etc., as needed.
- Participating in the development of spring and annual meeting sessions, including writing session descriptions and assisting with speaker recruitment
- Assisting in the development of seminars on topics of interest to section members
- Supporting the section newsletter editor by writing an article, recruiting writers, and/or providing editorial assistance.
Officers
At the October Investment Section Council meeting officers are elected for the coming year.
Section Chairperson – usually a council member serving his/her third year on the Council
- Prepares the meeting agendas, presides at the meetings of the Section Council, and oversees the activities of the section
- Acts as the section liaison to, and member of, the Finance Practice Advancement Committee
- Attends two meetings of the Council of Section Chairpersons
Vice Chairperson Usually a council member serving his/her second year on the council
- May be assigned duties by the section chairperson or council
- Acts as chairperson in the absence of the elected chairperson
- Attends one meeting of the Council of Section Chairpersons
Secretary
- Records and sees to the distribution of all meeting minutes
- May be assigned other responsibilities by the section chairperson or council
Treasurer
- Produces a draft budget for the coming year, with projections of section income and expenses
- Oversees the income and expenses of the section
- Reviews the quarterly section financial statements as prepared by the SOA staff
- May be assigned other responsibilities by the section chairperson or council
