Sections have common leadership roles that are filled by members of the council or "friends of the council." These roles have been mapped to the Section Activities framework that has been revised October, 2007.
Individuals can serve multiple roles. Some Sections may choose not to fill certain roles. Decisions involving resource commitments or the election of officers require a council vote with quorum present.
Chairperson–Is elected by the council as specified in the Section Bylaws. Is directly responsible for much of the Foundational Activity: Stewardship. Leads the section council and is the primary contact with the section for the SOA. Leads the council to develop an annual plan of work and section metrics. As chair, may participate in any of the section operations. Is a member of the Council of Section Chairpersons.
Vice Chairperson–Is elected by the council as specified in the Section Bylaws. Is also responsible for Stewardship of the section. Leads in the absence of the Chair. May participate in any of the section operations. Is a member of the Council of Section Chairs. Often, but not always becomes the next chair. (The Vice Chair is more like a prince than a vice president in this regard).
Secretary/Treasurer–Is elected by the council as specified in the Section Bylaws. OK to split the positions into two roles. OK to leave the role open (i.e. secretary) but the council is still responsible for documenting decisions and actions of the council ("notes."). The treasurer may be involved in approving payment of invoices, reviews financial statements prepared by SOA staff, and is encouraged to develop and monitor a section budget.
All other roles of a section may be appointed. They may be filled by a council member or "friend of the council." They may be filled by a member of the SOA or an affiliate member. They may be filled by one person or several They may have a term of office or have an open ended term. It is all the decision of the Section Council.
Communication Coordinator (Activities #1, #2, #7) personally or leads a team to develop a communication plan that coordinates all communications to the section members and externally to the section.
Newsletter Editor (Activity #2) works with Communication Coordinator (when there is one), council, and SOA staff to develop publications (paper or electronic). Obtains newsletter content from other volunteers or guest contributors. Layout and final editing lies with the SOA editorial staff.
Meeting Coordinator (Activity #3) personally or leads a team to coordinate the efforts of the section in providing content for meetings, seminars, webcasts and other educational events of the section. This person will work with the council, especially the treasurer, and the SOA Staff Partner to assess the content needs for a particular venue. The Meeting Coordinator may be responsible for developing a CE schedule for the section (working with the Staff Partner).
Spring Meeting/Annual Meeting Coordinators (Activity #3) works with the Meeting Coordinator (when there is one) council, and SOA staff to develop, describe, schedule, and deliver content for large events. These people may coordinate the work of others such as recruiters, presenters, and moderators. They are responsible for completing the information in the presenters' data base at the SOA and meeting key dates. Some sections may have additional coordinators appointed to handle large events (PD Symposium, ReFocus).
Web Coordinator (Activity #1, #2) works with Communication Coordinator (when there is one) and SOA staff to develop appropriate content for section web pages on soa.org. As was the case for newsletters, format and final editing lies with SOA Staff.
Research Team Coordinator (Activity #5) personally or leads a team (or Project Oversight Groups) to coordinate research activities for the section. Research may be performed by the section itself or is funded in part or in full by the section to be coordinated by SOA Research Department staff.
Basic Education Team Coordinator (Activity #4) personally or leads a team to assist in the development of exam material for the Society of Actuaries. There is an entire volunteer structure independent of the sections that support exams so the involvement of the sections is not a common occurrence on an annual basis.
Membership Coordinator (Stewardship, Activity #1) may monitor membership statistics and recommend plans to the council to ensure membership stability or growth.
Other Positions as Needed to achieve the annual goals of the section, there may be team leaders, etc. at the discretion of the council.
