Many group life and disability plans include conversion and portability features, either as a matter of a law or in order to satisfy market demand. These features pose a range of challenges to insurers, however, including adverse selection and administrative complexity. In this session, the speakers will review current practices in the group life and disability market and discuss ways of managing the challenges of these complex product features.

Group term life insurance is sometimes viewed as a simple product, but the pricing can be surprisingly complex. This session will explore a variety of current issues related to the pricing of group life insurance. Likely topics include mortality improvement, supplemental life, credibility and disability waiver benefits. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and share observations from their own work.

The SOA's Group Life Experience Committee collects data from group life insurers in order to perform periodic intercompany mortality studies. In this session, members of the committee will present the results of their recent work and discuss the implications for group life insurers.

The attached report presents the results of the survey conducted by the SOA Committee on Life Insurance Mortality and Underwriting Surveys on risk management practices of US life insurance companies. Both direct individual and group life insurance and reinsurance were included in the survey.

The results are used by companies to update pricing, and in the past, the IRS has used results to update Table I rates, which determine imputed income related to group term life employer plans.
