Patrick O’Brien passed away April 16, 2013 in St. Paul, Minnesota, from cancer brought on by hemochromatosis. He is survived by his wife, Cathie, eight children and 33 grandchildren. Pat and Cathie had been married 53 years.
Pat was born April 29, 1937 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from St. Thomas College and did his graduate work at the University of Minnesota, where he received a master’s degree in statistics. Pat taught high school math before entering the actuarial profession. He attained became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1975. He was also a member of the Academy of Actuaries.
In 1980, Pat and Cathie began Actuarial Consulting Services, which focused on determining the present value of pensions in divorce settlements. Clients were family law attorneys, one of whom spoke at Pat’s funeral and stated, “Family law attorneys are seldom without contention, but I never heard of any attorney or judge who disputed Pat’s valuations in court.” Pat had a sterling reputation and testified in over 40 jurisdictions. He worked until the month before he died.
Pat was a devoted family man and a strong Catholic, a virtuous man of great integrity.
