In Memory of Larry R. Sluder

Larry Richard Sluder, FSA 1976, MAAA 1978, of Pinehurst, North Carolina, passed away at his home Monday, July 20, 2015. He was 68. Born in Asheville, NC, June 22, 1947, he was the son of the late Clinton William and Mae Owenby Sluder. He was raised in Asheville and was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School in 1966.

Larry earned a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Asheville in 1969 and subsequently a Master of Mathematics from Wake Forest University. He fulfilled his actuarial requirements in an accelerated fashion while working for Pilot Life Insurance in Greensboro, NC. Larry’s actuarial peers in the Southeast recognized his excellence and contribution to their profession by electing him to the Presidency of the SEAC in 1988-89. Larry worked throughout the southeast including Atlanta, Dallas, Louisville and Orlando. He founded LTA Consulting, LLC, in 2003, and most recently was contracted with North Carolina Mutual in Durham.

Since 2006, Larry called Pinehurst home where he and Jo Ann resided at Pinewild Country Club. He was also a member of Pinehurst Country Club. Larry enjoyed golf, music, his profession, thought provoking wit, and horse racing.

Larry is survived by his wife Jo Ann Moran Sluder of Pinehurst; sister, Donna Donnelly (Jim); brothers Clinton W. ‘Bill’ Sluder (Sandy), and David Sluder; all of Asheville. He is also survived by his stepson Travis Comer of Trinity, his wife Kim, their two children and many nieces and nephews.
