In Memory of David Sommer
David “Dave” Benjamin Sommer, FCAS 1993, FSA 2014, MAAA 1992, passed away January 29, 2015. Dave was born in Concord, California, USA in 1964, the second in a set of triplet boys. As a teenager, Dave was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Later, he became a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Diego. Soon after graduating, he embarked on the pursuit of an Actuarial career. He evolved into an illustrious Actuary with an extensive international career; his experience spanned working on site in 20 countries across 6 continents. In spite of his outlier intelligence he was very down to earth, had a generous heart and was a natural teacher who encouraged his students to be more than they ever dreamed they could be.
He was the epitome of a Renaissance Man who lived passionately and embraced and excelled in all of his areas of interest, including 1) winning the 1999 Casualty Actuarial Society`s Ratemaking award, 2) playing the saxophone in the Brazilian Soul band MoJive, and 3) gaining executive appointments at leading multinational insurance companies and consultancies.
He arrived in Brazil in 1999 and even though he was a seasoned world traveler, when he first visited Brazil it was love at first sight. The country, the culture and the people all embraced Dave and the love affair was mutual. Dave died suddenly and tragically in January 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil; he was 50.
Dave is survived by his parents Melvin and Sybil, siblings Steven, Debbie, Scott and Bruce, and his beloved son Josef.
Donations in Dave’s memory can be made to the Spirit of Harmony Foundation at http://www.spiritofharmony.org.
