Call for SOA Board of Directors Election Nominations
The Society of Actuaries' (SOA's) Nominating Committee seeks nominations for the 2018-2019 Board of Directors.
What Positions are Open?
We seek nominations for President-Elect (three-year term) and Elected Board Members (three-year term).
What Criteria Must Nominees Meet?
Nominees must be fellows of the SOA and CPD compliant. More information can be found in the
Elected Board Member criteria and
President-Elect criteria. Nominees must complete the
Expression of Interest Form.
Nominees will be invited to complete a questionnaire and participate in a phone interview with representatives from the Nominating Committee. More information on the nomination and election process can be
found here .
Who is the Ideal Board Member?
The Nominating Committee seeks diversity in terms of areas of practice, industry or employment sectors, opinion and/or geographic locations. The most important characteristic is a willingness to engage constructively in the strategic direction of the SOA.
Is SOA Volunteer Experience a Prerequisite for SOA Board Service?
There is a certain amount of knowledge that comes from having served on education and other committees, section councils or the SOA Board. Prior volunteer experience (while not a prerequisite) is important, but is not the only factor that determines a place on the ballot.
What is the Time Commitment?
There are typically three SOA Board meetings (March, June and October) and an Orientation meeting (November) that are a day and a half each. Preparation for these meetings might take an additional half day. Typically, there are also monthly conference calls between the SOA Board meetings. Each board member will have additional assignments that could average one to two hours per week. The President-Elect will have significant additional time commitments.
More information can be found in the
Elected Board Member job descriptionand the
President-Elect job description.
What If I'm Nominated, But Not Elected?
With a finite number of seats available, and a highly talented pool of nominees, not everyone will be elected. Many nominees find success at their second (or third) attempt. There are also a myriad of volunteer opportunities within the SOA to develop your leadership skills. You can check these out at
What's My Next Step if I'm Interested in Being Considered for a Place on the Ballot?
Anyone who is interested in a place on the election ballot, either through the
elections process with the Nominating Committeeor through the
Petitions Process, must complete the
Expression of Interest Form. Please note: Completing the Expression of Interest Form does not guarantee you a place on the ballot.
Nominations must be received by March 30, 2018. Questions regarding the nominating process may be directed to Sheree Baker, Senior Director of Governance, at
