Hundreds of billions of health care dollars are not spent optimally, as health continues to be the highest rising cost sector for first world nations. Predictive analytics can help identify high-risk patients in the hopes that earlier/better interventions will prevent or at least mitigate their expected future utilization and costs. Two examples will demonstrate the statistical nuances of using actuarial methods to predict healthcare outcomes.

This session reviews GSC's 2015 Health Study, "Four Massages and a Funeral." Attendees will be taken on a fast-paced journey through the benefits landscape. Building on previous GSC health studies, this study re-visits how plan members and their dependents consume the benefits available to them. It zeros in on the specific trends seen over the past year--high paramedical usage, rising specialty drug costs (especially Hepatitis C) and a never-seen-before examination of prescription drug data related to the treatment of depression.

GSC uses its claims data and current research to highlight a strain in plan sponsor spend. The strain occurs in providing health benefits that people increasingly like to use, while costs are rising for the benefits that people really need to treat predominant health conditions challenging the Canadian population.

While this topic may provoke emotional distress for folks who crave a monthly massage or adjustment, fear not,… the mood of the presentation will be lightened with the annual GSC references to pop culture icons (Clare Danes, George Michael and Jenny McCarthy to name a few).

In the end, this session will advance the much-needed discussion on how health benefit plans may need to evolve to survive.
