Leticia Doherty, MBA, MIBA, is a life & longevity manager at IRB Brasil RE where she consolidates her knowledge of reinsurance. Three years ago she joined RGA as chief actuary to support and develop the actuarial and regulator staff at Brazil’s representative startup office. 

Prior to RGA, Doherty worked for companies in Brazil such as MetLife, Generali, Prudential, Bradesco, Towers Perrin, Golden Cross and Icatu Hartford.

She has more than 20 years of experience in actuarial functions regarding reserves, pricing, products, projections and planning. Doherty lead important and strategic positions during this period.

She is an active member and director of the Brazilian Actuary Institute (IBA) and has been a  member of CNseg and FenaPrevi committees for over 10 years. Doherty has also been a  member of  the Funenseg teaching staff for two years, member of Fenaber for three years and is currently an SOA candidate. 

She earned a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and an MBA in insurance and strategic management at Universidade Veiga de Almeida no Rio de Janeiro. Doherty also earned several certifications in actuarial science and management in the U.S. and Mexico. Doherty is familiar with Europe and North America’s cultural environment and is fluent in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Patrick T. Leary, M.B.A., LLIF, is corporate vice president, distribution research for LIMRA. Leary oversees LIMRA’s distribution research program. This program provides research on a wide range of direct and third-party distribution strategies, focusing on the economics of distribution, organizational practices and market trends as these channels evolve.

Previously, he managed LIMRA’s Specialty Distribution unit and prior to that, was a member of LIMRA’s group insurance research team.

Leary joined LIMRA in 1989. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hartwick College and his M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut. Leary also earned his LIMRA Leadership Institute Fellow (LLIF) designation in 2012.

Jim Toole, CERA, is a managing director at FTI Consulting and leads their life and health actuarial practice. He has lived and worked throughout Latin America and has over 25 years of experience in the life, health, P&C, and captive insurance industries. Toole is outgoing chair of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Latin America Committee and recently served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the SOA.

He was co-editor of the SOA textbook “Insurance Industry Mergers and Acquisitions” and served as lead researcher on the SOA project analyzing the potential impact of pandemics on the U.S. life and health insurance industries. Health policy interests include social determinants of health, medical errors and health impact assessments.

Ronald Poon-Affat, FSA, CFA, FIA, MAAA, joined RGA in 2012 and is responsible for leading a team based in São Paulo to offer risk solutions for the Brazilian market & the English-speaking Caribbean.

Based in Brazil since 1997, Poon-Affat’s 31 years of experience encompasses both developed and emerging markets in South America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Before coming to RGA, he led reinsurance teams in Latin America for Munich Re and Gen Re Life & Health. Poon-Affat was chief actuary for Guardian Life of the Caribbean and Trinidad, and the Puerto Rico operation of Atlantic Southern Insurance Company. He was also chief financial officer of Icatu Hartford, Brazil and chief risk officer of the São Paulo, Brazil-based health conglomerate Tempo Assist.

Poon-Affat has considerable consultancy experience and held positions with Tillinghast & KPMG (London, UK) and a local Trinidadian actuarial consultancy (which has since been acquired by Buck Consulting).

Originally from Trinidad, he received his actuarial science education at the City University, London U.K. He is a qualified British actuary (FIA), a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA), a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

Poon-Affat is the current Brazilian ambassador for the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the editor of the SOA’s Reinsurance Section newsletter. He is a past board member of the Board of Directors of the SOA and past council member of both its Reinsurance & International Sections. The SOA recognized him as an Outstanding Volunteer in 2015 and he was also awarded the SOA President’s Award in 2016.

He is the founder of the Artistic Actuarial Charity, “Artuaries.”

 

Federico Tassara, ASA

Federico Tassara, ASA, is portfolio manager of MetLife Chile. He is responsible for the profitability and actuarial analysis of behavior and trends of mass markets and employee benefits portfolios.

Tassara was an assistant professor of statistics at the University of Buenos Aires from 2008— 2013. At the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, he is the professor in charge of financial mathematics and actuarial model courses in the actuarial science master's degree and has been a tutor and jury of graduate thesis.

He serves on the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Latin America Committee, working on educational issues in Chile.

Tassara graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a BS in actuarial science. He is an Associate of the SOA.
