Evaluating Representativeness in Healthcare Claims Data Webcast

Healthcare claims data reflects who accessed care rather than who needs it. When AI and machine-learning models are trained on that data, they can look accurate overall while quietly underperforming for specific populations. For actuaries applying these models to pricing, screening, and care management, that gap is a real and often invisible risk.

This session introduces a practical framework for assessing representativeness and bias across three stages of model development, from data input to model building and application. Using controlled synthetic scenarios, we show how standard accuracy metrics can mask subgroup disparities, and how techniques like propensity-score matching and missingness-aware imputation partially address them.

Attendees will learn about a ready-to-use Excel tool that documents models in a standardized model card and helps compare model variants against their own priorities, bringing representativeness assessment directly into everyday actuarial practice.

The SOA believes this session may satisfy the USQS bias requirement, but ultimately, it is up to the individual actuary to determine if this session meaningfully contributes to their understanding of bias as defined by the USQS.
