Systemic Risk of Climate Change: The Bad News and The Good News Webcast

Climate change is rapidly becoming one of the most significant systemic risks facing pension plans, insurers, and long-term investors. This webcast will help actuaries understand both the scale of the challenge and the opportunities emerging from the global transition already underway.

Drawing on the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ Planetary Solvency research, the session will explain why surpassing 2°C of warming by 2050 could lead to severe global economic losses, widespread disruption of essential systems, and potential limits on insurability. These findings contrast with first-generation climate scenario analyses, which often understated risks due to narrow system boundaries and omitted feedback loops. Because systemic risks cannot be diversified away, actuaries and trustees must consider their implications for solvency, funding strategies, and long-term portfolio resilience.

The session will also highlight the good news: emerging tools that improve systemic-risk awareness and real-economy evidence showing how the energy transition is accelerating. Participants will learn how markets are responding to technological cost curves, industrial policy, and capital flows—often more quickly than political narratives suggest. Tikehau Capital will share how global savings are being directed toward decarbonization and nature-based solutions, illustrating practical pathways for institutional investors. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the risks, the transition dynamics, and the strategic responses available to fiduciaries.
