Candidate Message

In this fast-changing era of AI development, every profession is being challenged to rethink its role and value. I believe we, as actuaries, should take the lead in defining our profession’s role in the AI era, rather than allowing it to be defined for us. 

At this pivotal moment, the SOA plays a critical role in shaping the future of the actuarial profession, and I would like to help advance that mission by supporting initiatives that strengthen actuaries’ relevance, leadership, and readiness in an AI-driven world. If elected to the SOA Board of Directors, I would focus on helping drive the SOA’s efforts to: 

• Advance strategic initiatives that demonstrate actuaries’ value in the AI era; 
• Empower actuaries to lead the strategic adoption of AI across practice areas, grounded in prudence and professional judgment; and 
• Strengthen education resources and pathways to attract high-quality candidates and prepare actuaries for a changing world. 

I would bring to the SOA Board a broad actuarial perspective shaped by experience across North America and Asia, spanning life insurance, consulting, academia, and actuarial technology. My hands-on work in actuarial technology has given me a practical understanding of how AI is reshaping actuarial work across markets, while my academic background has shown me how education, research and practice can reinforce each other through this transition. 

It is a great honor to be an endorsed candidate in this year’s SOA Board of Directors election. Over the past 16 years, I have been privileged to volunteer with the SOA in a variety of capacities. The SOA has supported my development throughout more than two decades in the actuarial profession, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Board and help ensure it continues to deliver meaningful value to members around the world and across actuarial practice areas.

Describe your interest in serving on the SOA Board of Directors, including what motivates you to pursue Board service at this time and the specific ways you believe you could add value to the organization.

I am interested in serving on the SOA Board of Directors as a continuation of my 16-year record of volunteering with the SOA and contributing to the actuarial profession. At this stage in my career, having established my professional and personal base in Hong Kong, I am well positioned to dedicate the time and focus required for Board service. I bring a global perspective shaped by experience across Canada and Asia, spanning consulting, insurance, academia, and nonprofit sectors, with expertise in health care and group benefits, life insurance pricing, risk management, financial reporting, and actuarial technology. I aim to bring practical insight into evolving member needs and help the SOA strengthen its global leadership by advancing AI and technology adoption and fostering targeted collaboration between academia and industry to accelerate practical implementation.
