The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Summer National Meeting brings together insurance regulators and industry leaders from across the country to tackle the profession's most pressing issues.
At this August's meeting in Columbus, Ohio, a delegation from the Society of Actuaries (SOA) joined those conversations, bringing actuarial expertise and data-driven insights to discussions shaping the industry's direction.
Throughout the meeting, participants exchanged perspectives on key priorities and emerging trends, shared progress on ongoing initiatives, and explored opportunities for collaboration.
Latest Experience and Practice Research Releases and What’s Next
Representing the SOA Research Institute, R. Dale Hall, FSA, MAAA, CERA, Managing Director of Research, and Yutaro Seki, FSA, EA, MAAA, Experience Studies Actuary, presented to the NAIC's life actuarial task forces, contributing research-based insights to support informed regulatory decision-making.
Hall and Seki opened their presentation with a discussion of the SOA Research Institute’s Generally Recognized Expense Table (GRET) for 2027 for use with individual life insurance illustrations, which is based on information from companies’ 2024 and 2025 annual reports provided by the NAIC. They also gave attendees an overview of the GRET methodology, which included 377 companies.
Hall and Seki also gave an overview of the SOA Research Institute’s experience studies and the SOA/LIMRA Experience Studies Pro series:

Hall included highlights of practice research the SOA Research Institute has published recently, such as Complex Assets in Insurance and Annuity Industries and Fairness Metrics in Insurance, and the International Reinsurance Landscape Overview for U.S. Life and Annuities. And he shared some of the findings from the 19th Annual Emerging Risk Survey, which was released on March 10, 2026, by the SOA Research Institute and the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Connections Beyond the Conference Room
Joe Wurzburger, FSA, MAAA, Managing Director of Strategic Partnerships and Government Affairs at the SOA, joined Hall in hosting an SOA reception for members featuring guest speaker Michael Wise, Director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance. The well-attended event provided a valuable opportunity for regulatory colleagues and SOA members to connect and hear directly from Wise.
As an insurance director who is also an actuary, Wise brought a unique perspective to the discussion, sharing insights on key issues he is addressing both in South Carolina and at the NAIC level, including artificial intelligence, complex assets such as private equity, and reinsurance and offshoring.
