The Society of Actuaries Sponsors 2019 Matching Gift Campaign for The Actuarial Foundation’s Math Motivators Tutoring Program

SCHAUMBURG, IL (April 1, 2019) - The Actuarial Foundation is pleased to announce the Society of Actuaries (SOA) will again sponsor a Matching Gift Campaign for the Foundation’s Math Motivators tutoring program. The SOA will match its members’ donations to the program (up to US$62,500) starting today and running through Oct. 30, 2019. Last year, the SOA and its members helped raise nearly US$129,000 for the tutoring program.

When an SOA member  donates, the SOA will make a matching gift of the same dollar amount.  The Math Motivators tutoring program pairs high school students with volunteer tutors who include professional actuaries and college students majoring in actuarial science, mathematics or math education. The program provides free math tutoring to high school students who need extra help with math but cannot afford to pay for tutoring.

As a result of the generous donations from last year’s campaign, Math Motivators expanded from 2 cities to 7 cities. The number of volunteer tutors went from 200 to almost 1,000, and the program went from helping 310 students in 6 high schools to more than 700 students in 20 middle schools and high schools in the United States.

“The Math Motivators tutoring program is designed to help high school students, build their math skills and learn about the opportunities potentially available to them in the actuarial profession.  In addition, it is an opportunity for actuaries, retirees, and actuarial candidates to make a difference by volunteering in their communities,” says SOA President James M. Glickman, FSA, MAAA, CLU. “I encourage SOA members, candidates, and former members, to volunteer with the Math Motivators program, and if so inclined, to consider making a donation to help expand The Actuarial Foundation program to even more communities.  I am proud to see our organization participate by matching all donations up to a maximum of $62,500.”

By bringing back the Math Motivators Matching Gift Campaign for a second year, SOA members can help grow this award-winning tutoring program that is making a difference to help close the achievement gap.

“With your donation this year, we hope to grow the program from 7 cities to 15 cities. We want to increase our volunteer base to 3,000. Most importantly, we want to help more than 1,000 students improve their math skills and introduce them to the actuarial profession,” says Math Motivators founder Barry Jacobson, FSA, trustee on the Board of Directors of The Actuarial Foundation.

Donations from the SOA and its members will be used to grow and expand the Math Motivators program to more schools and communities in addition to providing the funding needed to administer the program, provide achievement-based awards and recognition for the students, and develop tutor training materials.
