The Society of Actuaries Announces the SOA Research Institute, Continuing the SOA’s Trusted and Innovative Research on Risk
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., August 26, 2021 – Today the Society of Actuaries (SOA) formally introduces the SOA Research Institute, which serves as an extension of the organization dedicated to the advancement of actuarial practice research on risk to support the profession, the insurance industry and the public.
The SOA Research Institute will carry on the organization’s mission and vision, through the creation, funding, development and distribution of research that elevates actuaries as leaders in measuring and managing risk. The Institute develops objective, peer-reviewed, data-driven research, managed by experienced actuaries and research experts from a broad range of industries.
“The SOA Research Institute will focus on impactful research that covers timely and emerging topics, and that taps into the knowledge of actuaries to address challenging risks affecting the world around us,” said R. Dale Hall, FSA, MAAA, CERA, CFA, Managing Director of the SOA Research Institute. “Our research volunteers and staff remain dedicated to developing and delivering applied research and primary research to help address societal challenges.”
The SOA Research Institute seeks to understand the underlying causes of risk and the possible outcomes, harnessing peer-reviewed research, leading-edge technologies, new data tools and innovative practices to provide objective insights. The Institute develops research on a variety of topics, including six strategic research programs: aging and retirement; actuarial innovation and technology; mortality and longevity; diversity, equity and inclusion; health care cost trends; and catastrophe and climate risk (launching this October).
“I’m proud to announce this formation of the SOA Research Institute through which we will create a supporting brand to deliver trusted and innovative research, working with our valued membership and through new connections outside of the insurance industry,” said Roy Goldman, Ph.D., FSA, MAAA, CERA, SOA President. “I’m pleased to see the Institute producing research for the public on current issues that have an actuarial context, such as on health care costs and the pandemic.”
Hall noted, “We serve as a key connector of actuaries, academics, employers, the insurance industry and regulators, research partners, sponsors and the public, building an effective network which provides support, knowledge and expertise on the management of risk. We’re here to help, tapping into our long-standing knowledge, ethics and reliability as a trusted resource, and look forward to opportunities working with others.”
The SOA Research Institute represents the thousands of actuaries – SOA members – who help conduct critical research to provide clarity and solutions on risks and societal challenges. The Institute helps shed light on key risks and the drivers of why it happens. The Institute has a large volume of topical research available, including an expanding collection of international and market-specific research, experience studies, models and timely research, such as on COVID-19 and climate risk.
