Society of Actuaries Announces Winning Teams of 2021 Student Research Case Study Challenge

Schaumburg, IL (April 28, 2021) – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) announced the winners of the 2021 SOA Student Research Case Study Challenge, which include Indiana University, Nanyang Technological University and Arizona State University.

The competition helps actuarial students highlight their knowledge and math skills, in addition to show their creativity, cooperation and presentation skills. Actuarial college and university students from around the world participated in this eight-week case study competition.

For this year’s case study, the teams addressed economic losses from global health risks through parametric insurance products. Parametric insurance refers to pre-determined insurance payouts based on a previously identified index measurement tied to one or more events, rather than payouts from assessed losses. The leading student teams focused on innovative research, thorough selection of details, used multiple methods of the study, were able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the material, and were able to synthesize and communicate results appropriately for a business audience.

The team from Indiana University received first place with a $5,000 grant, as they demonstrated a strong application of research to a business environment. The team from Nanyang Technological University received second place with a $3,000 grant, and the team from Arizona State University received third place with a $2,000 grant.

The three other finalist teams were from the University of Hong Kong, the University of Indonesia and the Lisbon School of Economics and Management from the University of Lisbon. See the full list of winners, finalists and semi-finalists.
