Standard Refund Policy

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) does not offer refunds for its examinations. No part of a fee paid to the SOA for examination registration will be refunded or transferred to a later exam period should the candidate not appear for the exam or not have the proper valid government issued identification at the time of the exam.

The SOA does recognize that events may occur that are outside a candidate's control. In those cases, there are two options that may be available:

  • Rescheduling Options for CBT. Because computer-based exams may be administered over several days, candidates may have the option to reschedule their test appointment within the same testing window provided the request is made by noon of the second business day before the scheduled appointment, and also provided there is a seat available. To reschedule a CBT appointment candidates must follow the directions posted here. All rescheduling needs to be done at Prometric
  • Emergency Situations. The SOA recognizes that unforeseen emergencies may occur that directly influence a candidate's ability to take an exam on an appointed day. We will consider these situations on a case-by-case basis. Candidates finding themselves in such a situation should contact SOA Customer Service at customerservice@soa.org.

Temporary Refund Policy

Updated January 10, 2024

This temporary policy is limited in scope as Covid situations are less frequent.

If after your registration, there are no available appointments at Prometric locations within 150 miles of your location or there are breakthrough Covid cases in your region and you are uncomfortable taking the exam, the following temporary policy applies with regard to transfers and refunds.

Requesting a Transfer or Refund of Examination Fees

  1. Having an Appointment at Prometric:

The deadline to request a transfer or refund is 14 calendar days prior to the date of your exam appointment. If you have an appointment with Prometric, you must first cancel your Prometric exam appointment prior to requesting a transfer or refund with the SOA. (Note: there is a Prometric appointment cancellation fee of $35.00 which is charged for all cancelled appointments within 30 days of the appointment. The fee is a Prometric fee required when cancelling and payable directly to Prometric at the time of the cancellation.)

  2. Regional Closures of Prometric Testing Centers:

If your region is shutting down due to Covid cases as a requirement of the government and Prometric will be closed as well – please wait to have Prometric cancel your appointment as then there will be no cancellation fee charged.

  3. Never made an Appointment at Prometric:

If you have not scheduled an exam appointment, you must make the transfer or refund request to our customer service department no later than 14 days prior to the first day of your exam window or the date of your exam if no multi-day window is offered.

January 1, 2024 – June 30, 2024 administrations of P, FM, FAM, FAM(L), FAM(S), and SRM

  • Requests for transfers to another open session of the same exam will be accepted only up to 14 calendar days prior to your exam appointment. You must cancel your Prometric exam appointment prior to requesting your transfer or refund. Exam transfer requests received after the 14-day deadline will not be accepted. If there is no open session of the same exam available a refund may be requested if it is prior to the 14-day deadline.

Spring/April/May 2024 administrations of ALTAM, ASTAM, FSA, ERM, EA, and PA Exams

  • Requests for refunds will be accepted only up to 14 calendar days prior to your exam appointment. You must cancel your Prometric exam appointment prior to requesting your refund. Exam refund requests received after the 14-day deadline will not be accepted.

Exam administration dates after June 30, 2024 are not currently covered by this temporary policy.

Candidates finding themselves in any of the above situations should contact SOA Customer Service at customerservice@soa.org.
