Description: At the conclusion of the first part, attendees will be able to describe sources of reserve redundancy for products under Principle Based Reserve (PBR) and products under Commissioners' Annuity Reserve Valuation Method (CARVM). Such products include Term Life, Whole Life, Universal Life, and Fixed Annuity with and without rider. We will also review sources of capital redundancy from the C-1 factor under Risk-Based Capital (RBC) and assets such as Unrated Asset Credit Fund can have high C-1 factor even if its risks are limited. At the conclusion of the second part, the attendees will learn about potential Reserve Relief reinsurance solutions. Such solutions can provide Reserve Relief for annuity and term life businesses, as well as potential innovative asset-side solutions. Asset managers can structure assets that the C-1 factor aligned with the corresponding risk.

Description: The use of longevity swaps are an area of growing interest in North America for insurers and pension schemes to manage their exposure to longevity risk. This growth is anticipated to continue as a consequence of the increased experience in the market and this maturity will encourage an improved affordability and ability for insurers to be flexible in this space. In Europe and Asia, longevity swaps are a much more established tool for risk transfer and optimizing asset-liability matching. From these markets, we can learn how to establish an effective framework in order to price, implement, and monitor performance of longevity swaps. By attending the session, you will be informed on the typical structure and modeling/valuation approach for longevity swaps including: - Understand longevity swap concepts, their benefits and common use. - Establish a basis for assessment such asmeasurement metrics, risk factors, and benchmarking principles. - Comprehend ongoing management such as basis risk, trigger points/pull-out clauses, potential operational issues, and asset transfer mechanisms. - Understand considerations and approach for valuing under US STAT and US GAAP.

From an actuarial perspective, however, end-of-life is important because of the significant cost to the healthcare system. Ian Duncan will discuss some of his research on the financial implications of end-of-life care, as well as the outcomes of a palliative care program. Dr. Matzo is an engaging personality with decades of experience in gerontology and palliative nursing, including training and teaching professionals in the field. Dr. Matzo focuses on educating the public on the importance and benefits of palliative care and hospice (care given in the final six months of life). In this session on “Palliative Care Public Education,” Dr. Matzo will give us an overview of the benefits of palliative care and how this knowledge empowers the individual to make important decisions about their healthcare options. Description: For over a decade, life insurers have been challenged by a low interest rate environment, making it difficult to find investments with adequate yield, manage corporate spreads, and offer competitive products to consumers. While interest rates are still low compared to the early 2000’s, volatility in rates over the past year, during which the 10-year U.S. Treasury rate has increased by nearly 100 basis points, could indicate a longer-term trend of rising rates. What would a rising rate environment imply for life insurance writers? Insurers able to react to interest rate changes with agility can remain relevant in an evolving economy, protecting themselves and their policyholders. This article addresses risks and considerations faced by insurers with respect to in-force retention, pricing and product mix, and reinsurance and mergers & acquisitions.
