Performed by Stéphane Levert, FSA, FCIA, the study (available in French and English) estimated the future costs of the Canadian health care system, assessed the sustainability of the system over a 25-year horizon, and analyzed the implications of the changes to the Canada Health Transfer proposed on Dec. 19, 2011 by the federal government. The report summarizing the findings indicates that, without significant government intervention, the Canadian health care system in its current form is not sustainable.

Description: This paper provides a summary of the Retirement Annuities Act of the Government of Alberta which came into force on July I, 1951. Two main purposes are served by the Act. The means are provided by which any Canadian citizen who has been resident in the Province of Alberta for the past three years may purchase a retirement income on very attractive terms. Further, the funds received under the Act will be loaned to municipalities for local improvements, at lower rates of interest than could be obtained on their own security. Description: Abstract: A common approach to estimating the total amount of savings required to fund retirement is to first apply a generic “replacement rate” to pre-retirement income, such as 80%, to get the desired retirement income need. That need is then assumed to increase annually at the rate of inflation for the duration of retirement, which is generally assumed to be some fixed period, such as 30 years. Using government data along with a fairly simple market and mortality model, we explore these assumptions to more accurately estimate the true cost of retirement.
