This new version of the model reflects historical U.S. population mortality experience through 2018. For clarity, the updated mortality improvement scale based on this 2020 version of the model is called Scale MP-2020. Description: This report, part of the Society of Actuaries [SOA] ‘Experience Studies – Business Practice Surveys,’ presents the results of a survey conducted by the SOA Committee on Life Insurance Mortality and Underwriting Surveys – Improving the New Business Process Survey Subcommittee. The survey examined the various changes U.S. and Canadian life insurance companies have recently made, or are considering making, to improve the new business process and to determine which changes were considered by the respondents to have had the most impact. Survey topics include the application process, changes to underwriting requirements, underwriting systems, underwriting resources, experience based on past changes, and policy delivery.

Description: This is a study of Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) mortality experience. The study consists of data furnished by the PBGC for the time period of September 30, 2009 through September 30, 2014. All of the data come from single-employer pension plans taken over by the PBGC in a distress termination. This is the SOA’s first study of PBGC experience and provides another comparison point of retirement plans mortality experience for work performed by pension actuaries.

Description: This report examines lapse experience on individual life products for a variety of policy and product factors. The study can be used for industry benchmarking, as well as for background information for the product development and planning process. The data contained in this report can help companies identify factors that impact individual life insurance persistency.

Description: Based on work performed by Bob Howard, a former member of RPEC, the SOA developed a spreadsheet-based program that allows users to create a customized mortality improvement scale using the RPEC_2014 model. The RPEC_2014_v2018 model found here is a new version of the tool updated by the SOA and RPEC to reflect historical U.S. mortality experience through 2016. The tool can be used to model different assumption sets while utilizing the same methodology underpinning the development of Scale MP-2018.

Description: The International Experience Survey/Study IES is a pilot study being conducted by the Society of Actuaries to provide actuaries with practical information on experience in emerging and other markets outside of the United States and Canada. The IES has evolved from being a survey of multi-national company experience to national studies directed by actuaries from the data contributors located in the country under study. This report follows this evolution by dividing results into two major subdivisions of results: • Survey: The survey presents high-level results that facilitate comparisons of experience between different countries. • National studies: In depth studies of experience in countries directed by local actuaries to present more comprehensive results
