Description: This presentation is a Teaching Session, number 30TS, from the 2002 Valuation Actuary Symposium, held September 19-20 in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The panelists discuss modeling issues for products with embedded options, such as minimum living or death benefit guarantees on variable life and annuities, and annuity death benefit enhancements. They discuss the risks posed by these features and products, selecting realistic dynamic assumptions, techniques used in modeling these features and products, stochastic analysis, and presenting results to best communicate risks clearly. Description: This paper was presented at the 1955 Society of Actuaries Eastern Spring Meeting, held March 24-25 in New York City. Noting that traditionally, group life insurance has been financed on a yearly renewable term basis, the author discusses the reasons for development of group permanent life insurance and the different funding methods. The author also presents certain analogies with the funding of pension plans, and discusses employee taxability issues under current tax law for the various funding methods.
