Description: As more gene and cell therapies enter the market at increasingly higher price points, they are ushering in a new era of medicine for rare diseases. Unlike most traditional therapies, gene and cell therapies typically have a short or one-time treatment administration and are anticipated to provide long-term clinical benefits. Actuaries must be prepared to assess, manage, and/or mitigate the risks associated with these therapies. This session includes three different perspectives—a regional plan, a stop loss/reinsurance carrier, and a health care consultant.

Description: Misalignment in value-based care approaches between payers and market segments (Medicare, Medicaid, self-funded employer groups, and commercial insurance) creates significant headwinds and friction for health care providers seeking to succeed in an environment that is moving toward more value-based care models and payment approaches. However, while multi-payer approaches in value-based care are critical to eliminating these misalignments, uptake in such programs has been lagging for a variety of reasons. Description: The Society of Actuaries' Pension Section and Health Section Research teams commissioned Professor Thomas E. Getzen of Temple University to construct a resource model for the projection of long term healthcare cost trends. The motivation for creation of the model was driven by its potential usage as a resource for the estimation of reportable liabilities for retiree healthcare benefits as specified under FAS 106 and GASB 45 accounting statements. This model, programmed in Microsoft Excel [xlsx format], projects per-person expenditures and growth rates through 2099 using a set of equations and assumptions developed by Professor Getzen with assistance from the Society of Actuaries Project Oversight Group appointed to oversee the effort. The model includes baseline assumptions as well as flexibility for user–inputted alternative assumptions.

Description: You will be reminded how to spot and avoid statistical biases and fallacies that are common to health care actuarial data and problems. We plan to explain various statistical biases and fallacies and for each show one or two examples of how they might pop up in healthcare data and what strategies can be used to avoid/account for them. Likely topics include simpson's paradox, regression to the mean, base rate fallacy, sampling bias, survivor bias, Berkson's fallacy, and others.
