This chapter introduces a general type of model that can be applied in many such situations. Section 1 reviews some models of this type that you’ve probably al- ready seen and then goes on to describe some practical applications for which those models are inadequate. These models: 1. do have both an intuitive and a precise probabilistic meaning, 2. do behave as do standard single-decrement models, 3. can easily be used to construct the full multiple-decrement model without any special assumption.
