Actuarial Research Conference August 1-4, 2012 at the University of Manitoba

By Sam Cox

The University of Manitoba Actuarial Program is proud to sponsor the 2012 Actuarial Research Conference (ARC). Actuarial mathematics has been taught at the university continuously since 1912. And this year’s ARC is part of the UM Actuarial Program’s centennial celebration. The Great West Life Assurance Company is the lead sponsor of this year’s ARC. GWL is a long-lime supporter of the UM Actuarial Program.

We are pleased to have commitments already from five invited speakers, Dr. Linda Golden, Tonya Manning, FSA, MAAA, Charly Pazdor, FSA, FCIA, Dave Snell, ASA, MAAA, and Rob Stapleford, FSA, FCIA.

Dr. Golden holds the Meyerson Centennial Professorship in Business, Department of Marketing, at the University of Texas at Austin. She will present results from her recent insurance market research.

Tonya Manning, FSA, MAAA, is President-Elect of the Society of Actuaries.

Charly Pazdor, FSA, FCIA, is a consulting actuary with Eckler, an independent Canadian consulting firm. Charly is a frequent presenter at the Fellowship Admissions Course of the SOA and he serves on a number of committees and task forces of the SOA and the CIA. His presentation will provide participants with an opportunity to earn Continuing Professional Development credit with an academic orientation.

Dave Snell, ASA, MAAA, will give two presentations on complexity science—what it is and why it is important. Dave is technology evangelist with RGA Reinsurance Company in Chesterfield Missouri. He is editor of the SOA’s Forecasting & Futurism newsletter and a frequent speaker at actuarial meetings.

Rob Stapleford, FSA, FCIA is Chair of the Accreditation Committee of the CIA. Rob will discuss the CIA University Accreditation Program.

Friday evening Sam Broverman will perform at the ARC dinner. Sam will perform with a group led by Winnipeg bandleader Ron Paley.

Details on housing (on and off campus), transportation, and registration can be found on the ARC website.

Sam Cox is chair of the Scientific Committee. Send him your abstract for an ARC paper presentation at scox@cc.umaniba.ca before July 1, 2012.

Of special interest is the homecoming event Thursday, August 2, 2012, as part of the Centennial Celebration. All ARC participants are invited. In addition to ARC participants, we are inviting all Manitoba graduates, former faculty, and friends of the program to join us this evening, whether they are going to the ARC or not. It will be a great opportunity to celebrate 100 years of actuarial mathematics at the University of Manitoba.

The annual meeting of the American Risk and Insurance Association will be held August 5-8, 2012 in Minneapolis MN, immediately following the 47th ARC and only a short one hour flight from Winnipeg. Going to both of these summer meetings is very easy to do this year.

The University of Manitoba is in Winnipeg, a wonderful place and is especially in pleasant summers. There are a lot of things to do and places to visit. We are looking forward to a wonderful conference and centennial celebrations. Come and join us!
