Speculative Fiction Contest: New Name and Expanded Ways to Enter and Win

An announcement about the new name of the Speculative Fiction Contest as well as some information about the contest's new categories for entry.

The Speculative Fiction Contest has a new name for 2022: The Speculative Spectacular Fiction and Art Contest. For the 15th holding of the contest, prize categories have been updated, and an art and social media contest have been added.  

Traditional Narrative Category: In the narrative category, first place is now a prize package that includes: US$400 plus a professional literary critique and an actor-read audio version of the winning story. Prizes remain in place for narrative second place, most unique use of technology, best use of futurism, most creative actuarial career of the future, best first-time entry, contest coordinator’s favorite, and People’s Choice. The contest will open in October (specific date TBD).

New Contest Category: The Speculative Art Contest is for all written formats other than narrative fiction; for example, poems, screenplays, or comics. Alternatively, this category includes visions expressed through photography, song, digital art, video, or whatever media entrants are inspired to produce. Awards are Best in Show Awards (up to 10) and a People’s Choice Award. This contest will run during the same period that the narrative contest is open.

New Social Media Contest: The Speculative Micro Fiction Contest—30 word limit, posted to Instagram—entry that gets most “likes” in a 24-hour period is the winner of an SOA swag bag and unlimited bragging rights! This contest will open for entries on Oct. 17 and open for voting on Oct. 31.
