Born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany on January 21, 1928, he served in the German military in 1944 and 1945 until the American army took him as a POW at the end of World War II. He remained with the company as Senior Vice President and Actuary until his retirement in 1990. In retirement he continued to play tennis and tend his garden, took up piano lessons, began woodworking as a hobby, and traveled extensively with Dottie. He attended St. Luke Lutheran Church from 1966 until his death. Heinz traveled almost annually to his class reunions until they were discontinued in 2015 and was the last survivor of his high school class.
