It goes without saying that the analysis of data is a key aspect of actuarial practice, but do traditional actuarial approaches allow us to see the whole picture? Effective data analysis is also key to the identification of health disparities and measuring progress on health equity. Actuaries and others analyzing data for health equity purposes find themselves looking at data differently. In this session, panelists will discuss the importance of analyzing health data with an equity lens and will explore the limitations of claims data, the need to understand and evaluate bias in data, and the importance of using data empathy as a tool to better understand and analyze data. Panelists will use case studies to highlight the lessons learned from the health equity perspective, including the importance of incorporating qualitative data and input from other data sources, such as clinical sources, while also understanding the limitations of that data. Attendees will come away from this session with an understanding and appreciation of how incorporating a healthy equity lens into the review of data results in a more complete and effective data analysis that leads to more informed conclusions in any context.
