The SOA Joins the NAIC 2025 Summer National Meeting in Minneapolis

Traveling to the heart of Minnesota nice, Society of Actuaries (SOA) staff shared information and mingled with state insurance regulators, industry representatives, and other insurance experts at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Summer 2025 National Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, Aug. 10–13. SOA Research Institute staff actuaries and volunteers presented on research to casualty, health and life task forces.

Life Actuarial (A) Task Force (LATF): Dale Hall, FSA, MAAA, CERA, Managing Director of Research, SOA Research Institute, presented on the SOA/LIMRA Experience Studies Pro series during the opening day of the LATF meeting and informed attendees of the timetable for upcoming studies:

Hall then reviewed research on population mortality trends with comparisons of current mortality to 2019 pre-COVID death rates. He also went over both recently published and upcoming SOA Research Institute life and mortality experience studies and practice research.

Casualty Actuarial and Statistical (C) Task Force: Hall also joined the CASTF meeting and presented findings from SOA research related to extreme weather and new technology. The presentation focused on research findings about climate-induced migration patterns and how that might affect property insurance. He also shared information about the use of machine learning and high-resolution imagery to delineate building footprints for use in property and casualty insurance. Additional topics included recent weather extreme events, such as the sea level rise, analysis of the July 2025 Texas floods and the wildfires in Los Angeles County in January 2025.

Health Actuarial (B) Task Force (HATF): Hall also presented to the HATF, sharing that the SOA Research Institute is collaborating with NAIC and LIMRA on a long-term care insurance (LTCI) study that will analyze policy persistency and claim incidence, termination and utilization trends. Currently, carriers representing 75% of the LTCI market have agreed to participate in the study. The project is a continuation of the partnership between the SOA Research Institute and LIMRA and deepens the SOA’s relationship with NAIC.

Hall also highlighted recent and upcoming health-related experience studies and practice research.

Connecticut Commissioner Shares NAIC 2026 priorities at SOA Dinner

The SOA hosted a well-attended dinner that featured as guest speaker Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais, who also has served as 2024 NAIC president and was co-chair of the NAIC Executive Committee on Race and Insurance. Commissioner Mais highlighted NAIC’s priorities for 2026, and he noted that NAIC will focus on the continued importance of state-based insurance regulation.
