Society of Actuaries Announces Two Actuarial Programs as Centers of Actuarial Excellence
Chicago, IL, Sept. 9, 2025 — The Society of Actuaries (SOA) has designated the actuarial programs at Ball State University, Muncie, IN, and The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, as SOA Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The SOA launched the CAE designation in 2009 to recognize universities around the world that offer strong actuarial programs.
The SOA congratulates Ball State University and The Ohio State University on achieving CAE status. These actuarial science programs help strengthen the position of the academic branch of the actuarial profession by enhancing research, and they support the profession’s future by providing students with the foundational skills and knowledge they need to achieve designations.
With the addition of Ball State University and The Ohio State University, there are now 45 CAE universities spanning four continents, with 24 in the U.S., five in Australia, nine in Canada, two in China, two in Hong Kong, one in Singapore, and two in the United Kingdom.
To qualify for the CAE designation, actuarial programs must meet eight main criteria, along with other requirements. The criteria encompass appropriate degree and curriculum offerings, graduate count, faculty composition, quality of graduates, appropriate integration with other areas of study, connection to industry, and research and professional involvement. Universities retain the CAE designation for five years, after which renewal is subject to compliance with the CAE criteria. Learn more about the SOA’s CAE program.
