2025 Student Research Case Study Challenge News Release

Society of Actuaries Research Institute Names Top Recipients of Student Research Case Study Challenge

Chicago, IL, May 2, 2025 – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute has chosen the top recipients of its 2025 Student Research Case Study Challenge awards, a global educational program that empowers actuarial students to showcase their skills. Team Factuarial from the University of Waterloo, Canada, received first place. Young Begawan Aktuaria from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, received second place and Black-Scholes Bros from Australian National University, Australia received third place.

Annually, the SOA Research Institute calls on university students to form teams of two to five participants to research a case study, conduct actuarial analysis, formulate solutions and present recommendations in a report. This year, the teams developed a national insurance program to provide economic protection from earthen dam failures for a fictional country. The SOA Research Institute received submissions from 68 teams among 42 universities, spanning 17 countries and six continents.

The selected teams’ universities receive grants: USD 5,000 for first place; USD 3,000 for second place; and USD 2,000 for third. Additionally, students from these three teams each receive USD 500.

The annual case study challenge offers students a platform to put their math skills and actuarial knowledge to the test and to demonstrate their creativity, teamwork, and presentation abilities. This challenge aligns with the SOA Research Institute’s objective to collaborate with universities in supporting future actuaries.
